"The best times you are going to have in life are at the dinner table and in bed." Old Italian saying. So relax, and enjoy the simple things!

American Goulash

American Goulash: simplelivingeating.com

A little chill in the air... back to school and busy schedule time. Have some American Goulash. It is easy to whip up. The Hungarian Paprika makes the dish a little more interesting than plain ground beef and red sauce over pasta.

Ethiopian Berbere Lentil Stew #Food of the World

Ethiopian cuisine consists mostly of spicy meats and vegetables served over injeria a foam, like textured bread that is made from teff flour, which is gluten free. This lentil dish is seasoned with Berbere, a spice mix that is primarily chili, but has many other seasonings such as coriander, paprika and clove.

Chicken Yassa #food of the world

Chicken Yassa- simplelivingeating.com

Food of the World has taken us this month to Senegal the West African country who's cuisine has been influenced by the French and Portuguese along with its African neighbors.

Larb Chicken Salad #Food of the World

Larb Chicken Salad- simplelivingeating.com

It's hot here in New York... so I couldn't have been happier to travel to Laos with Food of the World this week and make a warm weather dish.

Simple Egyptian Koshari #Food of the World

simple egyptian koshari: simplelivingeating.com

Koshari is a common everyday meal in Egyptian that I assume got it's inspiration from leftovers. Why else would one mix pasta, rice, lentils, and chickpeas all in one dish?

Harissa Chickpeas #Weekly Menu Plan

Harissa Chickpeas- simplelivingeating.com

After eating copious amounts of meat over Memorial Day Weekend my family and I are giving our systems a break. This Harissa Chickpea dish is flavorful enough that you won't miss having meat in your meal.

Smoked Ham & Peas Pasta #Weekly Menu Plan

Smoked Ham & Peas Pasta- simplelivingeating.com

Nothing says Spring quite like ham and peas. This is a simple recipe in which you can use up leftover ham.  Fresh peas are beginning to be available. If you can find them and use them that day...do!

Shrimp & Sugar Snaps in Red Chili Sauce #Weekly Menu Plan

Shrimp & Sugar Snaps in Red Chili Sauce- simplelivingeating.com

I can never go wrong making shrimp for my family, and there is no easier healthy meal to get on the table in 30 minutes than a stir-fry.

Simple Mince & Cheese Pie : Food of the World

Simple Mince & Cheese Pie: simplelivingeating.com

Here we are in New Zealand for Food of the World. I imaged the food to be, well, more island like. Native cuisine is made more with local vegetables and fish, both of which are not available to me in New York.

Mushroom Bourguignon #Weekly Menu Plan

Mushroom Bourguignon: simplelivingeating.com

There is still a little bit of a chill in the air, but by the end of the day it can be 70 degrees here in New York. It is hard to figure out what to cook. We want to eat lighter, but my family and I are not ready for salads for dinner. Mushroom Bourguignon has a rich flavor, but it is light because it is meatless.

Simple Chicken Fricassee #Weekly Menu Plan

Simple Chicken Fricassee: simplelivingeating.com

To me Fricassee was an expression not a dish. "I'm going to Fricassee you!" was a not uncommon threat from my mother. Little did I know that Fricassee is a classic French dish of fried meat in a white sauce.

Slow Cooker Beef Cholent #Food of the World

Slow Cooker Beef Cholent- simplelivingeating.com

We are visiting Israel for our "Food of the World" party this month. Israeli food is a mixture of native foods and foods that Jews who have settled there brought with them. Cholent is a classic Shabbat stew that originated in Vienna, that is cooked slowly overnight so observant Jews can eat it for lunch.

Simple Ways to Get a Better Night's Sleep #Weekly Menu Plan #Simple Living in Practice

woman lying on bed

Exhausted at 8 pm? Awake at 2 am... hanging out until your alarm clock rings at 6 am? Yes, I too have had nights like these. When it happens I usually have veered from my regular good sleeping habits. No one can follow a strict good sleeping guide every day, but if you follow these suggestions on most nights, you will sleep more soundly.

Slow Cooker Chicken with Sweet and Spicy Peppers #Weekly Menu Plan

Slow Cooker Chicken w/ Sweet & Spicy Peppers: simplelivingeating.com

When the weather gets warmer my family's schedule gets busier. That means it is time to get the slow cooker out, because I don't want to be tempted to spend a week's worth of grocery money on one meal and eat twice as much food as I need to, by going out to dinner.

Quick Food Photo Editing for Blog Posts #Weekly Menu Plan

food photography

Most of us food bloggers are not professional photographers or chiefs. We are usually just trying to get dinner on the table and take a decent photo of what we made.

Shchi: Russian Cabbage Soup #Food of the World

Shchi- Russian Cabbage Soup- simplelivingeating.com

"Shchi and kasha are our food." Is a rough translation of an old Russian saying. Shchi has been part of Russian cuisine since the 9th century when cabbage was introduced to this region.

Red Lentil Barley Soup #Weekly Menu Plan

I find the transition from Winter to Spring difficult. The damp, windy weather this time of year is depressing. You want to lighten up your cooking, but it is still cold outside. I find vegetarian soups the best for warming you up, and at the same time lightening you up.

3 Simple Ways to Loss Weight #Weekly Menu Plan

breakfast lunch dinner: simplelivingeating.com

It is post holiday season, and you are really starting to notice the extra pounds you gained. There is plenty of time before bathing suit weather to slowly and safely lose weight.

Norwegian Fish Cakes #Food of the World Party

Heritage Dish: Norwegian Fish Cake

I  had a little fish cake disaster. I was trying to simplify a Norwegian Fish Cake Recipe by mixing everything together at once in the food processor.

Slow Cooker Italian White Bean Chicken Soup #Weekly Menu Plan

Italian White Bean Chicken Soup: simplelivingeating.com

My son was so sick last week I needed to put a pot of chicken soup on for him. I had left over broccoli rabe and a half of a red pepper, so I added a can of white beans and made an Italian soup.

Broccoli Rabe Pancetta and Gnocchi #Weekly Menu Plan

Broccoli Rabe Pancetta and Gnocchi: simplelivingeating.com

Gnocchi roughly translates from Italian to mean "knob in wood". Some types of Gnocchi are a bit knobby looking, especially homemade versions.

Thai Coconut Chicken Soup #Food of the World

Thai Coconut Chicken Soup- simplelivingeating.com.

Beautiful, exotic, colorful and most of all complex. This how I would describe both Thailand and it's cuisine. Finding a Thai recipe for a simple living blog was a little bit of a challenge.

Tofu Scallion Peas & Chili Peppers #Weekly Menu Plan

Tofu Scallion Peas & Chili Peppers- simplelivingeating.com

“Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.” ― Michael PollanIn Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto
This is the simplest, healthiest, easiest to follow eating motto out there. Start the New Year not with a fad diet, but with motivation toward eating better. The first step is eliminating processed foods. Just stop buying frozen meals and baked goods that contain ingredients that you can't pronounce.
