What do you do with the 2 dried chipolte peppers?

Slow cooker Mexican chx soup.
I checked the recipe, it says to add the pepper in step 2. You just put it in, it hydrates as it cooks. You can eat it or not eat it. I don't find them that hot so I just break it up and eat it.
